Rihanna to receive Michael Jackson award at the MTV VMAs

She joins recent recipients like Britney Spears and Beyoncé.

MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award was launched at the inaugural VMAs in 1984 to honor The Beatles and David Bowie and it will be bestowed upon Rihanna this year. The nod is well-deserved, particularly after such recent momentous clips like ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ and ‘Needed Me’, as well as for being badass enough to print her own face on money she used to make it rain in the video for ‘Pour It Up’.

Last year the award went to Kanye West (as presented by Taylor Swift, womp womp) where he announced his 2020 presidential bid in a weeded, “broooo”-laden acceptance speech. It had nothing on Beyoncé’s career-spanning live performance, replete with polarizing “FEMINIST” backdrop in 2014. We can only imagine what Rih will come up with.

This won’t be her only major stop on the small screen. We recently reported she’ll have a major role in the final season of A&E Psycho drama Bates Motel as Marion Crane, re-enacting the shower scene that Janet Leigh made famous in 1960. There are also rumors she will be part of the cast of the all-female upcoming Ocean’s reboot.
