The legendary songwriter opens up in a massive interview.

Leonard Cohen will release his new album, You Want It Darker, this month and before it he’s taken part in a life-spanning profile with The New Yorker that sheds new light on his plans from here.

As with his new album, much of Cohen’s conversation is concerned with his own mortality. He talks about not being able to play guitar anymore (“I’ve lost my ‘chop’ ”), though he’s excited to show off what he can do with synthesizers. He also addresses the recent death of his longtime partner Marianne Ihlen and allude to his own while discussing new songs he doesn’t think he’ll be able to finish.

“Maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know. But I don’t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy … I am ready to die. I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me,” he says in a quote pointed out by Vulture.

His main focus right now is “putting his house in order” before that happens meaning the lengthy sort of tours he’s always been known for is fairly unlikely at this point:

“I am a tidy kind of guy. I like to tie up the strings if I can. If I can’t, also, that’s O.K. But my natural thrust is to finish things that I’ve begun.”
