This will be the composer and ambient icon’s first album since his recovery from cancer.

Ryuichi Sakamoto will release his first album in eight years this spring.

The currently untitled album marks the composer’s first original album since 2009’s Out Of Noise and will be his first since after recovering from throat cancer. His last release was the Golden Globe-nominated score to The Revenant.

When we spoke to Sakamoto last year he explained his recovery slowed a lot of his work, leaving him unsure about taking on scores yet.

“I was still not fully recovered yet. So it was a hard question to take this offer or not,” he said. Since then, Sakamoto has composed for multiple films including Rage, Any Other Normal and the documentary Haiku On A Plum Tree.

Details about the album, including the tracklist and title, are expected to be announced soon. For now, we know that album will be released April 28 on Milan Records.
