YouTube has acquired BandPage, a tool that helps artists sell direct to fans via streaming services, social media and ticket outlets.
BandPage allows musicians to create custom pages, through which they can sell everything from t-shirts to VIP experiences. BandPage already integrates with services including Spotify and StubHub, but as the company outlines in a statement, its acquisition by YouTube will “help artists reach their fans in more powerful ways than ever before.”
The acquisition comes shortly after the launch of YouTube Red, the video streaming site’s paid subscription service. While the service’s exclusive programming so far has been non-music based, YouTube last year launched YouTube Music, a standalone app that aims to capitalise on the site’s popularity as a go-to place for music streaming.
YouTube hasn’t yet commented on what it’s going to do with BandPage, but the added revenue streams the service will bring should make the video streaming site a more attractive platform for hosting content, whether it’s made by musicians or not.
It’s unclear how the acquisition will affect BandPage’s integration with Spotify, which last year launched a tool to help artists track their fans.
