As we reported earlier this week, Russian punk band Pussy Riot are currently on trial for the “punk protest” they staged in Moscow’s main Cathedral.

This week, as Russian President Vladimir Putin visits London, high profile musicians including Jarvis Cocker, Johnny Marr and Pete Townshend have signed an open letter calling for the three women to receive a fair trial, The BBC report.

In the letter to The Times, the musicians express concern over how Pussy Riot have been treated – particularly about “recent reports that food is being withheld from them and that they have appeared in court in a cage”. One of the band’s members received medical treatment in court on Wednesday.

The letter continues: “We believe firmly that it is the role of the artist to make legitimate political protest and fight for freedom of speech. As he visits the United Kingdom this week, we ask President Putin to ensure these three women receive a fair hearing.”

Martha Wainwright, Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, Kate Nash, Corinne Bailey Rae and the members of Cornershop are also among the signatories.
