More names have been confirmed and heavily rumoured to perform at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony.

First, Muse, whose abysmal ‘Survival’ is one of the Games’ official songs, have confirmed in an interview with NME that they will be performing it at the ceremony (this was always a given, really).  “I’m happy with the song. It’s a proper Muse song,” drummer Dom Howard told the magazine. “It’s not something we just did for the Olympics. They sowed a seed by asking us to do some music but then five months went by … It represented the enormous competition of what the Olympics is”.

Second, Kate Bush [above]. A 2012 remix of her classic ‘Running up that Hill’ recently appeared on Amazon, with the release date as August 12 (the same date as the Olympics closing ceremony). The listing was swiftly removed, which appears to confirm that even if Bush does perform the track at the ceremony, this 2012 remix will find itself included on A Symphony of British Music: Music For The Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, a compilation collecting music from the event and also due for release on August 12.

Third, The Spice Girls. Heavily rumoured to be reuniting for a performance at the Games, members of the group recently Tweeted that they were working with costume designers on outfits. Which, granted, could just mean one of them has a birthday coming up. Take That and The Who meanwhile, appear all but confirmed.

Ed Sheeran recently claimed in an interview with Australian radio that he would be collaborating with members of Pink Floyd on a performance of the latter’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, but the group’s representatives moved quickly to deny the claims. Their statement, however, doesn’t rule out Sheeran performing with individual members of the group, as it merely claimed that “the band” would not be performing.

George Michael appears to have confirmed his involvement, Tweeting that was spending most of this week “rehearsing like crazy for the Olympic closing ceremony … Obviously a bit nervous not having played for nearly a year, but rehearsals sounding great so far!”, while Madonna – if she can find time after her evening prayers, that is – is also heavily rumoured to be involved, potentially with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj in tow to perform ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’.

As well as the stadium closing ceremony, there will be an Olympics concert in Hyde Park, with Blur, New Order and The Specials all playing. The Olympics opening ceremony took place on July 27, and featured spots from Dizzee Rascal, Arctic Monkeys, Emili Sande (rumoured to be returning for the closing event), Paul McCartney and more.
