Disco-pop duo Sally Shapiro announce new album; stream the first single now

The Swedish duo will release the follow-up to 2009’s My Guilty Pleasure early next year.

Sally Shapiro is comprised of producer Johan Agebjörn and an anonymous singer, who also goes by Sally Shapiro. Since 2006, the pair have crafted gentle Italo disco that exists only on recorded media and in DJ sets: the singer does not perform live and refuses to return to the stage after a handful of 2008 DJ gigs.

For many fans, My Guilty Pleasure was just that: a saccharine disco-pop album that was irresistibly catchy. Unfortunately, the duo has been absent since then, with Agebjörn exploring his solo efforts.

Thankfully, the wait is over: Somewhere Else will be released February 26, 2013 on Paper Bag Records. Along with their trademark harmonies and disco feel, the pair have incorporated a wide range of influences, (citing “indie pop, funk, IDM, trance, jazz and ambient” in a statement) and collaborators (Electric Youth, Anoraak, and Le Prix).

“We don’t think of ourselves as an italo disco duo anymore, but probably we are just home blind, and people will call this an italo disco album anyway” Sally says. “The title describes the recurrent theme in the music and my life, to somehow never be satisfied with what you have, or where you are – to always wish you were somewhere else.”

Stream the gauzy, melancholic lead single ‘What Can I Do’ below (out November 20), which is followed by the album’s tracklist.
