2011, for many, was the year of Shangaan Electro.
The warp-speed dance phenomenon / musical style, pioneered by the incomparable Nozinja [above] took over our YouTube channels (via the incredible ‘Nwa Gezani My Love’), record decks (West London label Honest Jon’s compiled some of Shangaan Electro’s best tracks, then had them remixed by artists from the dub, techno, footwork spheres and more) and nights out (Nozinja and his dancers were brought over for various live shows and festival spots). Now, brilliantly, the Shangaan players are heading to the UK for series a dance workshop.
The workshops, which take place this July, promise that “dancers of all ages and abilitities can learn the secrets of this unique and infectious style. Set up on the floor like a Shangaan dance party, these will be affordably priced, limited capacity participatory events so early booking is recommended.” Nozinja, the masked Tshetsha Boys, and vocalists Tiyiselani and Nkata Mawewe will all be in attendance.
