It’s been a long time coming, but deceased rapper and first-wave hologram Tupac Shakur is to get the multiplex treatment.

Four years after The Notorious B.I.G. got his big-screen moment, the long-rumoured biopic of the California rapper has finally been green-lit. The project has been kicking around since 2010, with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua and Nixon and Ali screenwriters Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson originally attached to the project. The latter parties eventually jumped ship, but, as of March this year, Fuqua was still ostensibly on board.

As Deadline report, the Tupac biopic is now going into production, with filming scheduled to kick off in February 2014 in Atlanta. The script for the $45m production has been penned by Jeremy Haft and Eddie Gonzalez, and will be executive produced by Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur.

According to the project synopsis, the film will focus on “the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, from his emergence as a young artist, through his imprisonment, and last prolific years that catapulted him into the upper echelon of American cultural icons.”

No casting details have emerged as yet, although names previously rumoured to be in with a pop include Anthony Mackie – who depicted the rapper in Notorious – and Michael B Jordan (we’re guessing ex-Cash Money rapper Gillie Da Kid, who will portray the rapper in a forthcoming biopic of Death Row bossman Suge Knight, is unlikely to get the call).

If the talkies aren’t so much your thing, not to worry: as reported last week, a new “anti-violence” musical based on Tupac’s musical output is currently in the works. The Shakur estate have also recently suggested that all of the rapper’s unreleased material is to see the light of day in the near future.
