Virginia rapper talks about Bronx birth and inspirations for new album.

Following this week’s latest preview of the former Clipse member debut album, the Kendrick Lamar-featuring ‘Nosetalgia’, the Virginia rapper sat down with MTV News to discuss the lyrical content of My Name Is My Name.

For those not aware, Pusha T revealed that he and his brother were in fact born in the Bronx: “We lived on Gun Hill in Tilden Towers. A lot of people don’t know that. I shy away from saying that because I don’t want people to misconstrue that. I was raised in Virginia, and I don’t want nobody thinking that I’m trying to claim something that I was only living in for two years or whatever, but this is truly where I was born.”

Most interesting was Pusha’s explanation of what drove his approach to the music on the album: “It’s all about creating that nostalgia. When it came to My Name Is My Name I said to myself, ‘Man, I wanna make something that I love and I wanna listen to myself. I wanna go to an era and revisit an era that was strictly about lyrics.’ So I had to go to ’95-’99 — a great mixtape era, a great B.I.G./Jay era. To me it was just more so about re-creating the greatness of an amazing time.”

When you consider some of the tracks already leaked, especially the Kanye West-assisted ‘Numbers On The Board’, Pusha’s claim of wanting to emulate the classic mid-90s period is plain to see. You can watch the interview over on MTV News – currently only available to US-based viewers.

My Name Is My Name is set to drop October 8 featuring appearances from 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West.
