The English actor will play Sir Elton.

Variety reports that Tom Hardy will star as Elton John in Rocketman, a biopic that will be released in the US by Focus Features. The film will be directed by commercials director Michael Gracey from a screenplay by War Horse writer Lee Hall.

Rocketman will cover John’s often-tumultuous life story; John plans to re-record many of his hits for the film. Hardy is best known for playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and for roles in Inception and Lawless. He has biopic experience, playing notorious British prisoner Charles Bronson in Bronson.

The film joins a long list of musical biopics in the works, including films about Tupac, James Brown, and Jimi Hendrix.
