Classical concert season invaded by electro-pop icons.

A new work by the Pet Shop Boys based on the life of British codebreaker Alan Turing will premiere as part of this year’s BBC Proms season.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe will perform A Man from the Future at the Royal Albert Hall as part of Prom 8 on July 23, which will also feature new orchestral arrangements of five Pet Shop Boys’ songs by film composer Angelo Badalamenti.

Turing played a crucial role in breaking the German Enigma code during the second world war, but was later prosecuted for his homosexuality and eventually took his own life. In recent years a public campaign has resulted in the mathematician and computer scientist receiving a posthumous pardon from the Queen.

Though some snippets from the new work have been performed before, the Prom will be the first time the work has been heard in full.

The Proms line-up also includes an evening of music by minimal composer Steve Reich and several figures from outside the classical world, including Rufus Wainwright, Laura Mvula and Paloma Faith.
