It’s all about the boom-boom oscillation.
Airhead, aka UK producer Rob McAndrews, has apparently been to a few parties since writing his debut album For Years, released last summer on R&S.
Where that record mirrored the bedroom-bound electronica of Mount Kimbie and singer-songwriter leanings of James Blake (whose live band features McAndrews on guitar), his next offering, an EP titled Believe, is billed as a turning point for the founder of the 1-800 DINOSAUR label/collective.
“The inward has been ex-changed for the outward,” notes the press release, adding that Believe is “inspired by two years of 1-800 DINOSAUR parties” and is “all about the boom-boom oscillation and hands-in-the-air machine gun parties” (whatever they are).
The title track, a percussion-led house stomper fixed up with a soulful vocal sample and shimmering keys, went down a storm when Blake previewed it on his Radio 1 Residency show, while ‘Shirin’, ‘Shekure’ and ‘Hundred Waters’ explore McAndrews’ love of grime, dubstep and hip hop in their outsized bass wallops, crashing drums and ominous arpeggios.
Believe is out on July 21 in vinyl and digital formats via 1-800 DINOSAUR.
