Surgeon to reissue six volumes of early and unreleased recordings

Anthony Child digs up six archival releases through his SRX imprint.

After a search through some old DAT tapes turned up a few surprises, Surgeon has decided to reissue a bundle of his early recordings. As he explains: “I was shocked to find how clear and dynamic many of my early tracks sounded, not the way I remembered them from the vinyl releases.

“Those early tracks, recorded 20 years ago, were mastered and cut by people who had no understanding of electronic music. I actually remember cutting a dubplate back then and being asked if my track was “supposed to sound like that?” The engineer was so disgusted at my music that once the cut started he left the room until it was finished.”

Some of the releases have been re-pressed several times from the original plates, but none has have been remastered and re-cut in its original form, so that’s what he’s done with Christoph Grote-Beverborg of Berlin’s Dubplates & Mastering studio. The recordings will be reissued over six 12″s on the new SRX label, beginning with his 1994 Magneze 12″, originally released on Downwards. With the new title of Surgeon, it’s out on September 15 on vinyl and digital formats.

Also included in the series are some high-quality unreleased tracks from the period plus a few releases that were only issued in limited pressings the first time round. Surgeon has also commissioned Ken Meier and Yoonjai Choi from design studio Common Name to create some “sumptuous sleeve art”.

In the meantime, he’s got a new record coming on Token this month and recently wowed us with his ambient set recorded at last month’s Freerotation festival. [via JunoPlus]
