The celebrations for the landmark debut of Queensbridge’s finest culminate with release of documentary this October.

When Queensbridge rapper Nas released his debut, Illmatic, twenty years ago, people knew it was something special. Like all good things however, it has only gotten better with age.

Nas has been celebrating the album’s 20th anniversary all year long: first with the release of a deluxe edition and then with an extensive tour that saw him perform the classic to worldwide audiences. The celebrations culminate with the release of the Time Is Illmatic documentary this October.

Announced earlier this year, Time Is Illmatic was directed by One9 and looks at the making of Nas’ debut as well as the conditions that influenced its creation, the legacy of Nas’ family (his father was a jazz musician) and the reception it received from his peers.

A trailer for the documentary was released yesterday, which you can see below.

The documentary premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival in April this year and will open on October 1 via Tribeca Film. It’s not clear at this time if the release date is US-only or worldwide.

On October 2 Nas will embark on another tour to celebrate the release of the documentary with screenings and performances of the album. See below for dates.
