Sony resurrects the Walkman as a $1200 hi-res audio device

Sony’s once iconic music player is reborn for the second time.

Last year, Sony revived the Walkman as a high definition audio player with lossless codec support and a retail price of $300. The electronics goliath has today announced a new model Walkman that is set to retail for $1200.

The Walkman ZX2 is aimed almost exclusively at audiophiles. It is built upon a S-Master HX processor, which enables the playback of high resolution audio. The processor is the main reason for the Walkman’s hefty price tag.

The ZX2 runs off an Android system and has 128GB of built-in storage as well as a MicroSD slot. The device has wifi, bluetooth and NFC capabilities and at first glance it could be easily mistaken for a smartphone.

Sony is yet to announce a release date for its new Walkman. The recommended retail price will be $1,199.99. [via Mashable]
