Becoming Real returns with jungle and techno flavoured cassette; debut album also on the way

Tragedy befell Toby Ridler two years ago.

After a handful of promising singles and the inventive Solar Dreams/Neon Decay mini album, the artist known as Becoming Real got to work on his debut album in 2013 – but at the very moment he had it finished and ready for mixing and mastering, his hard drive went kaput and he lost it all. We shudder at the thought.

Undeterred, he got back on the horse and has now finished the album for the second time. No title or further details as yet, but it’s out on Transgressive in a few months.

Ahead of that though, Ridler has put together a cassette of “rougher jungle, techno and sound pieces” to be released as a run of 50 tapes (plus download code) on his new label ZONE, which he set up with Vickie McDonald after moving to Norway recently.

LQD OIL is his first music in two years and contains five tracks – we’ve had a listen, and it’s rather special, blending icy grime synths and bossy breaks with some fearsome in-the-red rhythms. It’s out on ZONE and available to buy for £2 from Bandcamp. Stream it below.
