Sci fi fans rejoice! Tron: Ascension will begin filming in 2016.

Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund are set to reprise their characters from 2010’s Tron: Legacy for the next instalment, while Joseph Kosinski returns to direct. The 2010 movie was the sequel to Disney’s 1982 cult classic Tron, which took place inside a futuristic computer world known as the Grid and starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. Kosinski has previously said that Tron 3 will focus on Wilde’s character Quorra and Hedlund’s character Sam Flynn, with the third movie given the suffix “Ascension”.

The big question for us, obviously, is who will do the music for the third film?  Tron: Legacy featured a Grammy-nominated soundtrack by Daft Punk, while the original Tron used music from electronic pioneer Wendy Carlos (the soundtrack was reissued on vinyl recently). Will the French robots return or is it time to let someone else have a crack?

The film is set to start shooting this autumn, probably in Vancouver, British Columbia. Plot details are being kept secret, as you’d expect. [via The Hollywood Reporter]
