The Body High co-founder recounts a break-up the “best way I know how.”

Samo Sound Boy has spent the last few years specializing in analogue-driven, synth-heavy house music. With Begging Please, he’s taken the next step as an artist, using the album format to relate a personal narrative — specifically, the dissolution of a relationship.

Begging Please is a story about the last couple years of my life, told best way I know how,” he says. Written and recorded in Los Angeles, he cites Marvin Gaye’s seminal break-up record Here, My Dear as a key influence.

“The idea that dance music could be considered one noted or lacking in depth has never made sense to me. I think the very simple way it builds up and down is so fundamentally reflective of living in the world,” he continues. “What’s dark and brooding can give way to the most ecstatic moments, all because one small thing is added or subtracted.”

That approach is apparent on Begging Please, as synth melodies, obscure soul samples and body-jacking rhythms fade rise and fall in time with the narrative at the album’s core. As he told us when he delivered his emotive FACT mix, “I like everything to sound like the last scene in a movie, that moment right before the credits start. I’m just trying to stretch that out forever, I guess.”
