R’n’G, eh?

There’s no precise definition for the genre, which stands for rhythm and grime, but it comes in several forms. There’s the quickfire, chopped up style, popularised by producers like Blackjack and with the modern-day torch carried by the likes of Finn and DJ Milktray, there’s the song-driven vocal side, showcased on Scratcha DVA’s Voice of Grime CD and by the likes of Terror Danjah and Sadie Ama, and then there’s the likes of Kid D, Iron Soul and Low Deep, who pushed a fuller and more intricate sound that pushed deep strings as much as it did vocal samples.

Grime may have had a period away from the limelight, but Kid D has continued to self-release regular EPs and mixtapes through iTunes. His latest, RnG God, features six new tracks driven by thick basslines, reverberated bell and mallet melodies and ghostly vocals – it’s not hard to see his influence on artists like Visionist. Iron Soul, who has also produced as Kromestar and Dark Knight, has his first EP in over four years en route: there’s no release date at the moment, but clips are streaming on his Soundcloud.
