An R&B artist-to-watch changes direction.

L.A.-based singer Mila J (the older sister of Jhené Aiko) is expected to follow last year’s M.I.L.A. with a proper debut album this summer. To hold over fans until then, she’s teamed with fellow Angelenos BC Kingdom for the Press Start EP.

Unlike the radio-ready sounds of M.I.L.A., Press Start favors the woozy R&B of something like Jeremih and Shlomo’s No More EP. Still, this isn’t just smoke session background music: the video game-sampling ‘Play’ has a four-on-the-floor heart, and tracks produced by P. Morris (‘Ninja’) and Her Records’ Cyphr (‘I Used To Love You’) are propulsive in their own ways.

“This has been a fun and liberating experience. I was able to tap into a deeper / darker side of myself that I’ve been wanting the world to see and hear,” Mila tells i-D. “BC Kingdom understood where I wanted to go sonically and the chemistry with them was undeniable. We blended so well with one another. Expect more from this musical marriage.”
