“I want to be the biggest in the world.”

The 18-year-old rapper who went viral after being picked by SoundCloud’s “recommended tracks” to play after Kanye West has signed a major label record deal.

Rory Fresco became famous in less than 24 hours after his track ‘Lowkey’ was chosen by SoundCloud’s algorithm to play after Kanye’s ‘Real Friends’, which was uploaded to the site in January.

Since going viral two months ago, ‘Lowkey’ has had 1.72m plays on SoundCloud and earned him thousands of new followers – figures that have earned the Kansas City-based artist major label attention.

As Pigeons & Planes reports, Fresco has just signed an undisclosed deal with Sony Music subsidiary Epic Records, home to rappers Future, Travi$ Scott and Tink.

“The whole SoundCloud thing helped my record pop off, and they heard some other records,” Fresco told Pigeons & Planes over email, following a showcase with Epic CEO L.A. Reid.

“I decided to sign because I wanted to get to the next level. My plan was never to be an underground artist. I want to be the biggest in the world.”

Despite bagging a bonafide success in picking Fresco’s music, SoundCloud’s recommended tracks function is being phased out by the streaming site, which last month announced a new and improved version called Stations.
