Max Richter’s sublime Songs From Before gets 10th anniversary vinyl reissue

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Max Richter released Songs From Before.

His third album, it followed the popular (and genre-defining) Blue Notebooks (elements of which were used in HBO’s The Leftovers) and was released on Fat Cat offshoot 130701 in 2006 on CD only.

Now for its 10th anniversary the album is being reissued on vinyl by Deutsche Grammophon. When it was originally released, it marked a shift into grander territory for Richter, with narration provided by Robert Wyatt – David Bowie was also a fan, saying the album “has the power to produce tears when listened to in the right setting”.

In recent years, Richter has gone from strength to strength, penning high-profile scores and embarking on last year’s ambitious (and indeed, record-breaking) SLEEP – 8-hour album intended to act as an aid for sleeping.

Richter also contributed a mix to FACT’s ongoing series last year, blending classical masterpieces with experimental marvels from Grouper, Boards of Canada, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and others.

Songs From Before has been remastered and is set for release on May 27 on vinyl, via Deutsche Grammophon. You can pre-order the record here.
