Afeni Shakur, mother of the late rap icon Tupac, died last night in her home in Sausalito, CA after suffering a possible cardiac arrest.

Born Alice Faye Williams, Shakur was an influential member of the Black Panthers in New York and was arrested in 1969 on a bombing conspiracy. She was acquitted in 1971, right before she gave birth to her son.

After his death, Afeni founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, which supports art programs for young people with money from Tupac’s posthumous albums. She will serve as an executive producer of the upcoming biopic All Eyez on Me.

Listen to Tupac’s 1995 tribute to Afeni ‘Dear Mama’ below.
