Sales of 1500 copies of Beating Heart can feed 500 Malawian school children.

Luke VibertRudimental, Machinedrum, Throwing Shade, Phil Moffa, Clap! Clap! and Malawian musicians Drew Moyo and Sonye, are among the artists invited to remix archival Malawian recordings for a new project called Beating Heart.

The remixers were given special permission to delve into the world’s largest collection of African recordings – the International Library of African Music – which was founded in 1954 by leading 20th century ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey. Tracey compiled around 35,000 recordings across Africa over the course of six decades.

The vault – currently being digitised – has never been opened to remixes before.

This Malawi edition is the first of 18 albums due to be released by the Beating Heart series, with each LP focussing on a particular country. It’s not known yet who else is participating in the project.

All proceeds will go towards Beating Heart’s food initiative, Garden to Mouth (G2M), which teaches nutrition knowledge and crop-growing skills. [via RA]

A launch party is taking place June 1 at London’s Oval Space and will feature a surprise DJ guest.
