Damon Dash is working on a TV series about Roc-A-Fella Records, the label that Dash co-founded with Kareem Burke and Jay Z in 1996, reports Deadline.

The label was set up to release Jay-Z’s first album, Reasonable Doubt, which in June celebrated its 20th anniversary with a pop-up shop in LA.

The forthcoming series will explore the rise and fall of Roc-A-Fella, which kickstarted both the careers of Jay Z and Kanye West, and was eventually sold to The Island Def Jam Music Group in 2005, following tensions between the founders.

Dash is co-developing the show with producer Lemuel Plummer, with whom he also collaborated for reality TV series Music Moguls, which is due to air later this year.

Plummer explained that the show is “about the actual behind-the-scenes story that’s never been told,” rather than focussing on the music itself.

However, it will be largely informed by Dash’s perspective. “My experience is colorless. The reason why Roc-A-Fella crossed and became so essential to pop culture is that we were probably the most authentic people that were also so sophisticated,” he told Deadline yesterday (August 29). “My experience doing white people shit is just as heavy as my experiences doing black people shit. Actually I think I’ve done white people shit better than white people.”

A launch date for the series has yet to be announced.
