The track comes from her debut EP, Project 11.

MOBO-nominated songwriter Jorja Smith has released the first single from her debut EP, ‘Something In The Way’.

The 19-year-old Walsall native broke through last year with ‘Blue Lights’, a track that gained her a MOBO nomination for best song and a support slot on FACT favorite NAO’s recent UK tour. Drake is also a fan, having said in a recent EW interview that Smith’s ‘Where Did I Go?’ was a summer favorite.

Smith’s debut EP, Project 11, is released on November 18 and features four new tracks co-written with and produced by Charlie. The first single from the EP, ‘Something In the Way’, described as “an ode to unrequited love,” sees Smith strip back further from the pulsing R&B of previous tracks ‘Where Did I Go?’ and ‘A Prince’, singing about how “even the sun doesn’t seem to last” over gentle D’Angelo-ish guitars. Check it out below.

“I wrote it with the other songs about a year and a half ago,” Smith told Annie Mac last night. “I sang classical at school so I always like putting elements—like Prince always has classical elements—so, with this song, you don’t really know what to expect with all these operatic sounds. And then it goes into a bit of attitude,” she laughs. “I’m giving a bit of attitude on this song.”

The release of Project 11 will be followed by Smith’s first headline tour, which includes sold-out shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham. The full Project 11 EP will be available everywhere from Friday.
