Dominowe represents Durban’s thriving gqom scene on debut EP

The South African talent readies a club killer for the end of this month.

Fans of Durban’s blossoming gqom scene should recognise Dominowe from last year’s essential genre compilation on Rome-based label Gqom Oh!, with his bone-crunching club weapon ‘Africa’s Cry’ one of the album’s clear standouts.

Following EPs over the last two years by fellow Durbanites like DJ Lag and Rudeboyz, Dominowe is the next gqom artist in line for an official solo release with his SiyaThakatha EP.

Also due on Gqom Oh!, the label founded by South Africa’s Lerato Phiri and Rome’s Nan Kolè to bring the South African sound to Europe, the EP offers nerve-jangling, bass-heavy tracks in the related gqom and sgubhu styles along with a gqom-house mutation on the digital release called ‘Club Killer’, which definitely lives up to its name. No surprise we named him one of our artists to watch in 2017, then.

The SiyaThakatha EP is out on January 27 as a limited 12″ and digital release via Bandcamp.

Before that, meet Dominowe himself in a new short film from Gqom Oh! below. Take a deeper look at South Africa’s new generation of house in our feature from January last year.
