Ruff Sqwad instrumentals reimagined live at The Jazz Café.

Ruff Sqwad reissued their iconic White Label Classics compilation in 2012 – a cult release that brought together 22 of the east London grime crew’s finest instrumentals, including ‘Functions on the Low’, ‘Pied Piper’, ‘Anna’ and ‘Misty Cold’.

16 years after the crew formed in Bow and Rapid – one of the producers behind Ruff Sqwad’s icy, distinctive sound – is set to reimagine the album in a live setting with the White Label Orchestra.

Taking place at The Jazz Café on February 26, the event will also feature “a few faces who’ve helped grow the genre along the way.” Tickets are available from the RA site.

Ruff Sqwad went on hiatus in 2013, releasing final single ‘Your Love Feels’. Their breakup was later confirmed by Ruff Sqwad member Tinchy Tryder in 2015, but the crew’s influence continues to be felt among the newer wave of grime – including Stormzy, whose ‘Shut Up’ track uses Ruff Sqwad affiliate XTC’s snowy ‘Functions On The Low instrumental.
