Jay Z praises Women's March but avoids questions about Donald Trump

Refuses to give his opinion on the US president.

Jay Z took part in a Q&A at the Sundance Film Festival on Wednesday (January 25), during which he discussed his new Spike TV documentary series Time: The Kalief Browder Story, while also taking questions about the ongoing anti-Trump demonstrations.

“More than ever, the people have to come together,” he said during the Q&A, as the Daily Beast reports. “We have to tell these stories, and we have to organize in a way that we never have before, because that’s the only thing that affects change. I hate to sound like such a cynic. Everything is based on votes, and who you can put in office,” he added, swerving any direct mention of the newly-elected US president.

“We have to organize,” he stressed. “I’ve been in these meetings, I’ve spoken with people, I’ve done many things behind the scenes, but most important: We are the power.”

At one point during the discussion, Jay Z was asked for his thoughts on Donald Trump, to which he curtly replied, “not gonna answer that,” before fellow executive producer Harvey Weinstein fielded the press towards questions about the series.

Talking about last Saturday’s Women’s March protests, Jay Z said: “I’m sure a lot of you guys participated in it, but that display of woman power the other day was so amazing and we saw the effect: That no matter what, no matter who’s in office, we are the people that’s in power.”

Time: The Kalief Browder Story is a six-part television series about the late Kalief Browder – a 16-year-old student from the Bronx who was arrested in 2010 for second-degree robbery and imprisoned at New York City’s infamous Rikers Island for three years with no conviction.

“Kalief Browder is a modern day prophet; his story a failure of the judicial process,” the ‘Empire State of Mind’ artist said about the project, which he executive produced, last October. “A young man, and I emphasize young man, who lost his life because of a broken system.” The series is slated to hit Spike TV in March – watch the trailer below.
