Mala In Cuba, Mala’s recent exercise in cross-cultural fusion, has given the DMZ head a new access of energy.

The record saw Mala on forward-thinking form, transposing his trademark production tics into unfamiliar contexts. The accompanying live shows have also seen the producer experimenting with live instrumentation. His Deep Medi Musik label, meanwhile, has nudged along the careers of promising newcomers like Kahn and Old Apparatus. His latest release, however, will see him dig out two vintage unreleased productions.

DMZ029 will feature two familiar tracks from the vaults, ‘Stand Against War’ and ‘Maintain Thru Madness’. The former has been knocking around for the best part of five years, and it’s Mala to a T – skittering polyrhythms, tumescent bass and exotic instrumental flourishes. ‘Maintain Thru Madness’ is the newer cut, dating back to c. 2010, and it’s the trickier, antsier cut of the two.

‘Stand Against War’/’Maintain Thru Madness’ is due Monday. DMZ fans, take note: Mala offers some sage advice in our How To…Run A Clubnight feature.
