Coachella to remain in Indio through 2030

Yesterday, the City Council of Indio, California approved a proposal for Coachella’s promoter to expand its offerings, which should keep the festival in the desert through at least 2030.

In September, the city shared documents that suggested that Goldenvoice, the promoter behind Coachella and country music sister festival Stagecoach, was hoping to expand beyond the two weekend model, staging three festival weekends in the spring and two in the fall.

In March, Indio’s Planning Commission recommended that the council approve Goldenvoice’s bid, which the City Council did, by a 4 to 0 vote. In turn, Goldenvoice will more than double the city’s share of per-ticket revenue (from $2.33 per ticket to $5.01) beginning next year. Indio’s Planning Manager, Joe Lim, called the agreement a “significant milestone” in the city’s development, which calls itself the “city of festivals” and features a guitar amp in its logo.

This year’s Coachella Festival takes place on the weekends of April 12-14 and April 19-21. The Stone Roses, Phoenix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Modest Mouse top the bill, which unfortunately will not include Daft Punk or Lou Reed. [via Los Angeles Times]
