Madlib discusses progress of Madvillainy 2, drops hour-long mix

Madlib‘s current UK trip – which has already thrown up a killer Boiler Room set and the most exciting surprise gig of the year – rumbles on, and he’s continuing to use his time productively.

The beat auteur stopped by Benji B’s Radio 1 show yesterday evening, and, unsurprisingly, Benji B dedicated pretty much the entire show to his guest. Madlib filed an hour-long mix, featuring a familiar blend of skewed funk and head-nod. He also offered some insight into the state of the long, long-awaited sequel to 2004’s instant classic Madvillainy:

“Right now, it’s up to DOOM. He’s not obligated to do it, but he just does it when he feels it – you can’t just do anything at any time when someone tells you to do it…We recorded around 10,12 songs, but usually we record about 20 and pick the best ones, so we’ve got to wait until we get to that mark”

Elsewhere, Madlib talks about his fractious relationship with alter ego Quasimoto (“we had a fight a couple of weeks ago”, “he took my last girl”, etc.), being sued throughout his career (“I see why a lot of you homies don’t sample!”) and crate-digging with Dilla in his final days. Head here to stream the mix and catch the interview.
