Spotify to announce free service for mobile and tablet users

As anticipated, streaming behemoths Spotify have loosened their streaming policy even further.

Up until today, those who wished to use Spotify on the go (and are unwilling to lug around a laptop for the privilege) were required to sign up to Spotify’s Premium tariff, priced at £9.99 per month in the UK. No more, it seems.

Earlier today, Spotify boss Daniel Ek told an audience in New York that the service is now extending its free-to-use service to mobile and tablet users. Tablet owners will be able to enjoy exactly the same service as desktop users. Smartphone users, meanwhile, will have access to a select pool of tracks, presented as a “shuffle” radio service.

The Telegraph suggest that Spotify is being badgered by investors to increase its subscription uptake, and that the move into free mobile streaming will likely increase subscriber numbers down the line. The announcement follows a year of fending off brickbats: following criticism from the likes of Thom Yorke and Minstry Of Sound, the service recently took the unprecedented step of publicly breaking down its price policy.

A trailer for the new service is below. In addition to the news, Spotify will also be expanding into 20 new markets in Europe and Latin America. More importantly, they’ve secured a big scalp – Led Zeppelin’s catalogue will finally be available to hear through the service as of Monday.
