Art rap project moves to Philadelphia after New York and Los Angeles.

The Rap Quotes project is without a doubt one of the best art projects to deal with rap’s relationship with cities. Conceived and executed by Jay Shells, Rap Quotes involves the designer printing rap lyrics that namecheck specific locations onto official looking street signs before putting them up at the exact spot.

After starting in New York City in March 2013, Shells took Rap Quotes to Los Angeles earlier this year. He then returned to the Big Apple in the spring and this week he was in Philadelphia, putting up signs from the likes of Will Smith, Meek Mill, Action Bronson, Jay Electronica, Danny Brown and Black Thought across the city.

New York magazine Animal once more has a full gallery of Rap Quotes’ Philadelphia movements as well as a short interview with Shells on how locals received his artistic endeavours, including one older man who apparently ran out of his house in socks asking what was going on before approving of the project’s public art approach and noting that “Oh, okay, I know Jay Electronica, very good.”

Head over to Animal to view the whole gallery and words from Shells, as well as a video documentary of his Los Angeles efforts. We’ve selected a few of our favourites from the Philadelphia trip below. Next up is Atlanta and Shells also says he has his sights set on Detroit.
