It’s an age-old stereotype.

Unfortunately, there’s now a Tumblr devoted to it. White guys with beards playing with modular synths – in this case the popular Eurorack format.

Artists offered the slightly dubious honour of being featured on Eurorack Dudes With Beards include M. Geddes Gengras, Blawan and several other white, bearded men.

You can check it out here, but once the meme novelty has worn off it’s worth noting that Tumblrs like this probably just exacerbate the visibility problem for women and minorities in electronic music as a whole. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Antenes are two artists we can think of that show modular synthesis is not just the domain of white men with beards.

The Female Pressure Tumblr is a good example of a more positive way to go about things – if someone would like to start one up that proves the Eurorack stereotype wrong, we’d love to see it.
