Aladdin Sane immortalised in SW9.

Lambeth council is set to protect the David Bowie Brixton mural that became a shrine following the Brixton-born star’s death in January.

“Local listing would protect the mural and the council is also considering renaming the area where the mural is in Tunstall Place,” wrote council leader Lib Peck in a statement posted to Lambeth News today (March 21).

“It is ultimately the family’s decision as to what may be appropriate. We must respect that and be patient. Lambeth residents have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection visibly demonstrated by floral tributes, messages and people visiting the Bowie mural to pay their respects to this unique Brixton boy,” said Peck.

The artwork, painted by artist Jimmy C on the side of Morleys department store on Tunstall Road, has brought thousands of tributes and flowers from fans, prompting the local council to suggest that a local listing would protect the mural.

A listed building may not be demolished, extended, or altered without special permission from the local planning authority.

Last week, the New York recording studio where Bowie recorded 2013’s Blackstar and his final album The Next Day shut down.
