Keys has called the award one of the “proudest moments” of her life.

Alicia Keys has been honored with Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award for 2017.

The award, which was announced by Amnesty today (April 12), “celebrates individuals and groups who have shown exceptional courage standing up to injustice, used their talents to inspire others and who have furthered the cause of human rights.”

It also aims to “create debate, encourage public action and raise awareness of inspirational stories and human rights issues.”

Keys called the award a “huge honor” and one of the “proudest moments” of her life. “Especially as an activist, as a woman, here in this world, who is driven to recognise the injustice in the world and recognize the unfairness the inequality, the things that have to change, the ways that we as everyday people, all of us, have a part to play in that,” she says.

Throughout her prolific career, the US star has campaigned fearlessly for vital issues and causes including criminal justice reform, HIV/AIDS awareness, gun violence and the refugee crisis.

Her philanthropic work includes co-founding Keep a Child Alive (KCA), a non-profit organization providing treatment and care to children and families affected by HIV in Africa and India. In 2014, Keys also co-founded the We Are Here Movement, which seeks to mobilize and give young people a platform for demanding change.

The Indigenous rights movement of Canada has also been honoured with the award, which will be officially presented at a ceremony in Montreal, Canada, on Saturday May 27.
