Major Lazer announce new album, Frees The Universe, feat. Amber Coffmann, Ezra Koenig, Shaggy, Tyga, Bruno Mars

Diplo’s dancehall-inspired Major Lazor project has announced a new album, Free The Universe.

Originally the work of Diplo and Switch (who contributes to the project but is not an official Major Lazer member – we only found this out yesterday, too), Frees the Universe marks Lazer’s second album, following 2009’s Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do. As you might expect from a man with one of the biggest Blackberry phonebooks in music, Free the Universe seriously ups the ante in terms of guest appearances: Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, who recently appeared on Diplo’s Radio 1 show, appears, as does Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffmann, Cash Money’s Tyga, Bruno Mars (!), Wynter Gordon, Dev, Shaggy, Flux Pavillion and more.

Interestingly, the press release for the record states that although Diplo is the “sole executive producer’ for Major Lazer, for the project’s work on Snoop Dogg Lion’s new album Reincarnated he’s joined by Ariel Rechtshaid and Vybz Kartel collaborator Dre Skull under the Major Lazer name [via Pitchfork]. Read about Snoop’s Reincarnation here and stream ‘Get Free’, by Major Lazer feat. Amber Coffmann, below.

On top of the album, Major Lazer have announced a new tour, with the yearly Red Bull Music Academy Notting Hill Carnival event looking like a particular highlight. Those dates follow the video. Oh, and don’t forget about all those block parties.
