Damon Albarn has delved into the vaults and yanked out some unheard Gorillaz material.

Albarn sat in for Dermot O’ Leary on BBC Radio 2 this weekend, and used the platform as an opportunity to air some long-lost material from his erstwhile cartoon-pop project. The lush, heavily orchestrated ‘Whirlwind’ was originally laid down during the sessions for 2010’s Plastic Beach, but didn’t make the final cut.

Rather poignantly, the 90-second track was recorded with the Syrian National Orchestra in Damascus. As Albarn notes, several friends in the orchestra have fallen out of touch since the crisis escalated in the country, and the song is dedicated to their continued wellbeing.

‘Whirlwind’ is available to enjoy below; alternatively, head here to listen to the show in its entirety.

Albarn features on Event II, the new album from resurgent alt.rap supergroup Deltron 3030. He’s also working with South London singer Terri Walker. [via Consequence Of Sound]
