UK funky-sampling single propels Drake to new record.

Drake’s ‘One Dance’ has hit seven weeks at the top of the UK single charts, making it the longest reigning number one since Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’, which topped the charts in 2007.

Perhaps one of the reasons behind the success of ‘One Dance’ in the UK singles charts is its vocal sample of UK funky anthem ‘Do You Mind?’ by Kyla. Back in April, when Drake’s song was unveiled, Kyla spoke to Trevor Nelson on BBC 1XTRA to explain how she thought the whole thing was a joke: “we signed papers and I still didn’t believe it. I had a feeling someone was gonna say to me ‘April Fools’.”

Should ‘One Dance’ continue to hold its top spot for another week, it will overtake Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ which stayed at number one in the UK for 10 weeks in 2007. [Via NME]

In the US, ‘One Dance’ is also Drake’s first number one single in the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The album it’s taken from, Views, has been all about record breaking with the most single-week album streams and the biggest first week of sales in 2016.

The Canadian rapper is also now Spotify’s most streamed artist and as we explored in a new feature, the new rules surrounding the inclusion of streaming data into the charts might also explain the length of Views.
